Description
The museum is housed in the former Ottoman station of the Hijaz Railway (1908-1916), which historically connected Damascus to Medina for pilgrims. The restored Ottoman building is itself a heritage site. Nineteen galleries showcase the history of Medina from pre-Islamic times to the present day, including a section dedicated to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Companions. Period steam locomotives are displayed outdoors, along with 12 restored carriages. Admission is free. This is a perfect activity for children fascinated by trains and history—they can see real Ottoman locomotives. NOTE: The site is regularly closed for renovations—check opening times before visiting. It is approximately a 1 km walk from Masjid Nabawi.
